It took a pandemic for me to create our wedding album - nearly four years later

It took four years and a pandemic for me to create our wedding album.

I always try to let my clients off the hook when they tell me their goal is to turn their thousands of photos into photo albums. That was even before I personally realized how massive a job photo albums are. Ever since our wedding in September 2016 I had a sinking feeling about our photos.

So few were printed and they were hiding on Dropbox and on various hard drives - completely unsorted. A talented friend volunteered to photograph our wedding, and we agreed that she would just turn over the 3000+ photos to me to organize. “That will be a fun project!” turned into a sinking feeling every time I though about it. Our beautiful day had never seen the light of day.

Around 20 hours and a few very real splitting headaches later, the photo album is done. It was even harder than I thought, but I was very pleased with Mixbook for the final product. Now, the photos are sorted, edited down by about half, and saved on two external hard drives.

Here’s the lesson: Now more than ever I strongly feel that photo albums are NOT worth it! Your own wedding might be worth it, but if facing thousands of photos for the hope of one or dozens of albums, let yourself off the hook! If you’re a natural photo enthusiast who is masterful at easily making albums within weeks of an event, then go for it. Or, if it’s a milestone event pay a pro to do it. For the rest of you, set up a Google Photos account to share, let the guilt go, and call it a day.
