Saving newspapers from historic events: to save or not to save

Working mostly with clients in and around DC, I unearth a lot of election newspapers and paraphernalia. Ooo, it's abundant in this town! I think I once even found a front page from Nixon's impeachment. Wish I had snapped a pic.

So, what should people do with history-making headlines in print? Here are a few ideas:

  • Don't keep them.

  • Keep just the front page instead of the whole section.

  • Ask yourself where *exactly* you will keep them.

  • Just keep them for a few weeks. No one said you had to keep them for generations.

  • Display the news (if it's good news to you!) like my client did here with the Biden papers and when it's lost its luster, trash it, don't store it.

  • When you later uncover them and savor that moment of nostalgia, ask yourself if it'll be as sweet the next time around.

  • Evernote the cover and any articles of interest, or save the pic however you save pictures.

I can tell you from years of experience with these that people usually are not as overjoyed to revisit the past as you would expect, even if the outcome was favorable in their opinion! Instead, people tend to trash them quickly and relish in the space they made. If you have the space and hold your collection near and dear, then you're allowed to keep them! It's just that most people can't check both these boxes...
