The true fate of all of your things

Recently, this quote on Instagram jumped out at me:

Everything you have will one day be given. - Kahlil Gibran

In searching for it on the web later, I couldn’t find it.  Left to wonder about Gibran’s intended meaning and context, I assigned a literal meaning.  I’ve recently been a devout estate sale shopper.  I probably saw this coming down from the high of snagging some unspeakable bargain on a one-of-a-kind doo-dad. 

Was it the gold Cross pen for $11? 

Was it the 26 pieces of cotton crocheted table clothes for my wedding for $40? 

Was it the like-new Le Creuset pot for $30?

Regardless, estate sales are a bold reminder that indeed, everything we have will one day be given (or sold).  Meditate on this the next time you have trouble letting go of something you no longer adore.  Before you buy anything, remember that if you don’t give it away, someone will. Hopefully this mantra will serve as a filter to keep close to you only what matters.
