Optimizing kids’ pop-up home offices: 2 examples

Who would have thought that this fall kids’ home offices would be essential? Be it a spot at the dining table or a room-turned-office, kids need spaces optimized for learning and focus every bit as much as their parents. Parents are still trying to figure out their own setups while doing the same for their kids. It’s tough, but families are adapting in creative ways.

I’m not a parent, so here I defer to two friends who seem to have it figured out. If they won’t own up to that, they at least have put a lot of thought into their children’s homeschool spaces.

Some of you remember my personal stylist friend Lani Inlander of Real Life Style. We did a webinar together back in April. She has two fabulous posts on her 8 and 6 year old’s school set-ups in their DC condo. They are full of excellent organizing ideas! NYC Professional Organizer Kelly McMenamin guest wrote the first post. She shares some favorite supplies such as school boxes, a 3-tier rolling cart, electric pencil sharpener, and more.

In her second post Lani focuses a little more on time management for both her and her sons, with pictures of the boys’ schedules and daily checklists.

Another friend recently surprised his 10 year old daughter with a beautiful basement home office. Here are Amazon links to everything pictured here, coming in at just under $400:

Rose gold desk organizer set
L-Shaped desk (The white one is not available as of the time of this post.)
White tufted swivel chair
Neon pink cloud
Framed Ariana Grande poster
Flower string lights

I love the idea of giving some personality to the wall behind the student so they feel cute and confident during Zoom calls. Her review after the big reveal: “After school today I’d like to continue crying happy tears.” Let’s all make “happy tears” the goal for school stations and home offices! Not everyone has the space these two parents have, but one or two smart purchases, be it a bin, a sorter, or a string of lights, can make all the difference in bringing some of that fresh back-to-school feel.
