[Video] My own dining room home office
Little did I know that in July when I filmed this video, it was the to be the last video I'd film in my Silver Spring, MD condo. We were just days away from finding our current home in Annapolis. Without space for a proper home office, for nearly 20 years, I ran a business from my dining table and I did it well.
Many of my clients also work from a dining room, but struggle with it. Papers and supplies are perma-littered on the table or in makeshift boxes and piles on the floor, staying there during dinner, if dinner happens at the table at all. No matter how suboptimal the space my clients present to me, we've always been able to make it work better. With a new perspective, poorly-used spaces light up as opportunities for "office" systems and storage.
For example, what's more important to be near you if you have to work at your table? Placemats or paper flow systems? Even if your space has to double as a living or dining space there are creative ways to keep close the bare work essentials.
I'd put off filming this video for years. I'm glad I got it in in the final months because it shows how to:
Create a micro desk adjacent to your dining table (1:22)
Use dining room drawers for a hidden, flat filing system (3:23)
Keep office supplies and tech in a dining room credenza (4:37)
I also had to give space in my upstairs closet to office needs. In addition to clothing and linens, I kept up there my archival files and additional supplies. I take you upstairs to my old bedroom to show you how to:
Use the back of a closet door for supple storage (7:01)
Keep archival files in file boxes (8:52)
You'll also get a peek at all of my file categories (9:03) and see exactly what I kept in my Ikea desktop sorter (12:54).
It took me 20 years for this tightly organized hidden system to sing. In this video I pull back the curtain and share it all! Even if you have a "real" home office (like I do now!), you'll gain some fresh ideas for maximizing your workspace at home.
